This unique programme takes us on a journey into the musical world of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The exciting, radical changes of modernism are woven into the sonic experience, while the formidable momentum of the raging technological revolution also gave rise to a longing for elsewhere: an escape into dream worlds, and even a sense of nostalgia.
Bartók’s pulsating masterpiece, lasting just a few minutes and driven by ecstatic rhythms, is brought to life this time by string instruments. Concertgoers can also enjoy one of Debussy’s most famous piano pieces, Clair de lune, in an even more mysterious, impressionistic rendition by violins, violas, cellos and double basses. Finally, drawing on the richly textured late-Romantic world of Arensky, the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra bids farewell to the audience of this 60-minute concert without interval in a mood of evocative remembrance.
